Jeromy van Riel, New Zealand carver

Earlier this year, I was approached by the very talented Wanaka carver Jeromy van Riel to document one of his masterpieces - a magnificent walking stick (tokotoko). This exquisite stick is carved from whalebone, complete with a greenstone (pounamu) handle, pukeko feathers, paua inlay, muka binding and kyanite touchstone.

Behind the immense work of the creation of the stick there is also so much narrative, based on Maori symbolism and nature.
