Step One to a Perfect Wedding: The 'First Look'

Step One to a Perfect Wedding: The 'First Look'

Human beings are superstitious creatures; from our historical fear of black cats and neighbourhood witches to the practice of carrying around lucky rabbit’s feet, most of us today can agree that humanity has believed in some obviously bogus concepts. Why, then, do so many of us still operate on the assumption that the bride and groom seeing each other before the wedding is bad luck?

In reality, there are many ways in which having a 'first look' can enhance a couple’s special day. First and perhaps foremost, it breaks the tension. Even the most confident of us are nervous before our big day, and that’s just to be expected—you, the happy couple, love each other enough that you’re about to commit to one another for the rest of your lives, and you only have one day in which to create all the special memories that will mark that milestone. Naturally, you want it to be perfect.

If you go into the ceremony and see each other for the first time when you have possibly hundreds of other eyes watching you, things are a lot more likely to feel rather awkward and nerve-wracking. By seeing each other for the first time in a situation that is much more private, you allow for a moment of spontaneous joy and emotional connection that is all your own. You affirm that you’re both ready for this. You defuse some of the shock value, and fuel one another’s pre-ceremony confidence. Imagine a peaceful moment in the orchard, or near a lake, away from the hustle and bustle of the wedding preparations… What could centre you both more than that?

Likewise, when it comes to the creation and capturing of wonderful memories, the first look helps immensely. The wedding photographer present will be able to take some uncluttered photos that truly show who you are as a couple in a natural, unstructured environment—one that’s ideal for capturing the unfiltered joy and anticipation you’ll both be feeling. Also, this practice allows your photographer to find exactly what your best angles are and what your most flattering light is—preparing him or her to take the most amazing possible photos during the ceremony itself.

The photos can be as raw, emotional, and creative as you want them to be; you can stage your first look however you want to, and make it reflect you as a couple. Maybe you want to recreate your first meeting, or add an element from another precious memory that was formed while you fell in love—it’s all up to you!
